On 23 September 2025, ImagineHealth initiated the seminar "Unlocking Cultural Codes in Thai-Russian Business" in collaboration with the Thai-Russian Chamber of Commerce (TRCC). More than 50 Thai and Russian business leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals joined the programme in Bangkok.
The event reflected a lesson we have learned through our own international work: successful cross-border partnerships depend on more than a promising opportunity or a well-written agreement. They depend on the ability to understand how people from another culture communicate, make decisions, establish credibility and build trust.
As a Thailand-based company that has developed initiatives with Russian partners over several years, ImagineHealth sees cultural intelligence as a practical business capability. We proposed the seminar to help the wider business community turn that capability into stronger working relationships.
Two perspectives, one practical conversation
The seminar was co-facilitated by Nadya Kalwa, Cross-Cultural Consultant at ImagineHealth, and Larry S. Persons, PhD, Director of Executive Development at JacksonGrant Executive.
Their combined perspectives enabled the discussion to move between cultural frameworks and everyday business situations. Participants examined how Thai and Russian leaders may approach hierarchy, directness, relationship-building, disagreement, timing and decision-making differently.
The objective was not to reduce either culture to a list of fixed traits. Individuals and organisations vary. Cultural frameworks are most useful when they help leaders notice possible differences, ask better questions and adapt without losing authenticity.

Trust is expressed differently
Trust is essential in every market, but the route to trust is not universal. One partner may place greater weight on personal relationships and the time invested before formal business begins. Another may interpret directness, decisive action or demonstrated competence as a stronger sign of reliability.
When expectations remain unspoken, normal behaviour can be misread. Respect may look like hesitation. Confidence may feel too direct. A desire to protect harmony may be interpreted as agreement even when important concerns remain unresolved.
Cultural intelligence helps leaders pause before assigning intent. It gives them a wider range of explanations for what they observe and a better chance of responding constructively.
Learning through real situations
Participants worked with realistic scenarios rather than discussing culture only in the abstract. This made it possible to explore how expectations influence meetings, negotiations, feedback, relationship management and the handling of uncertainty.
The discussions also showed why no single party carries the full responsibility for adaptation. Strong international partnerships are built when both sides become more curious about the other's context and more deliberate about making expectations clear.
For organisations, this can reduce avoidable friction, protect important relationships and help diverse teams reach decisions more effectively.
A strategic capability for cross-border growth
ImagineHealth's core work is in healthcare, wellness and longevity, but these sectors are fundamentally international. Patients, providers, investors, technology companies and public-sector partners often enter a collaboration with very different professional and cultural reference points.
Our experience bridging Thailand with international markets has shown that introductions alone are not enough. Sustainable cooperation needs market understanding, trust and the ability to translate between different expectations. Cultural intelligence strengthens each of those foundations.
This seminar therefore represented a natural extension of ImagineHealth's role as an independent connector. By investing in the human side of collaboration, organisations can give promising commercial and institutional relationships a much stronger chance of success.
Continuing Thai-Russian collaboration
